"MATH 135: Introduction to the Theory of Sets.

The six available questionnaires from the last year agreed that
KACZYNSKI'S lectures were useless and right from the book. Three
questionnaires from the Math 120A class last spring said he showed
no concern for the students. "He absolutely refuses to answer
questions by completely ignoring the students."

---from 1969, SLATE, unofficial course evaluation"

"Former department chair John Addison said "there was nothing
negative (about) his entire stay" at UC Berkeley....

"He said he was going to give up mathematics and wasn't sure what
he was going to do. ... We tried to persuade him to reconsider,
but our presentation had no apparent effect."

_Daily Californian_ April 5, 1996 (Berkeley, CA)

According to what I heard, Kaczynski was the only tenure-track professor ever to resign when he was still wanted by the department.

"Students and faculty in the UC Berkeley mathematics department said yesterday that they were concerned that the recent connection of a former UC Berkeley math professor to the Unabomber attacks could have a negative effect on the school's reputation." --Daily Cal, April 5, 1996.

UC Berkeley has the top-rated graduate math department in the country (in its opinion).

From April 5, 1996, Daily Review (Hayward, CA)

Addison expressed his relief that another mathematician in the department had not turned out to be the Unabomber. When pressed, Addison admitted he had someone in mind and had even thought of contacting the FBI. He declined to comment further.

I hope we don't have any copycat mathematicians...

SYNCHRONICITY ALERT!
According to what I read in the media, the little one bedroom stucco cottage on Regent street (terminating at People's Park) where Kaczynski lived as a professor (1967-69) was more recently (1992) occupied by "Rosebud" Denovo, 20 year old militant, supposedly very intelligent (although not a student or professor), accused of possessing, although not detonating, fertilizer bombs, and most famous for breaking into the Chancellor's mansion at night, armed with a machette, where she met her death at the hands of the police while resisting arrest (some say) or because the cop who shot her was overly cautious because he had been shot in a previous unrelated arrest (some say).

FLASH!! My faith in the media is shattered. A different paper says Denovo lived in the main house, 2628, and Kaczynski lived in the cottage in the back, 2628-A. Also, that Denovo died in 1991, not 1992.

One newspaper said Kaczynski had a blue bicycle, one said red. Yet another account says he had two.

His Montana cabin looks neat and meticulous; a newcaster calls it delapidated.

I wish they would get it together. Have they been hanging around the leri-l list too long?

What I want to know is did Kaczynski know Leary and Alpert at Harvard in 1962? (There's one I haven't heard on the news yet.)

FLASH July 6, 1999
July 6 1999 LA TIMEs reports:
"Alexander Cockburn writes for the Nation and other publications
"It turns out that Theodore Kaczynski, a.k.a. the Unabomber, was a volunteer in mind-control experiments sponsored by the CIA at Harvard in the late 1950s and early 1960s" ....

And I thought I made that up.
